Eskom appoints previous National Health Ombudsman Malegapuru Makgoba as chair

Makgoba's appointment follows the resignation of Jabu Mabuza and makes way for a board restructure.

Following the resignation of Eskom board chairman Jabu Mabuza, the power utility has announced the appointment of Professor Malegapuru William Makgoba as its interim chair.

Makgoba joined Eskom in 2018 as a non-executive director. He is an immunologist, physician, public health advocate, academic and former vice-chancellor of the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He’s served as the National Health Ombudsman and is a member of the US National Academy of Medicine.

His appointment follows President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement on Friday 10 January of his plan to introduce a reconfigured Eskom board with the appropriate mix of electricity industry, engineering and corporate governance experience.
