Amazon Web Services has announced the launch of a new Amazon CloudFront Edge location in Cape Town.

Amazon Web Services has announced the launch of a new Amazon CloudFront Edge location in Cape Town.

Amazon CloudFront is a global content delivery network (CDN) service that delivers data, videos, applications and APIs to viewers with low latency and high transfer speeds.

“We have been using CloudFront to deliver our applications to farmers all over the world. Given that we typically serve data in the order of gigabyes, CloudFront has enabled us to role this out efficiently and quickly. Serving a lot of customers in South Africa, the new launch means that our local client base will be able to access their farm data even faster than before,” said Benji Meltzer, Aerobotics Chief Technology Officer.

Until this year Amazon's cloud services have been largely located in North America and Europe, making for relatively long latencies – giving local Internet service providers a slight technical advantage over the global giant.

South Africa's two major cities will both have low latency on CloudFront services.

South African customers have already seen a 75% average improvement in latency, Amazon says.

Amazon's corporate customers in South Africa include Pick 'n Pay and Absa.
