Learn how you can help create one million work opportunities with Youth Employment Services.

On 16 October, Youth Employment Services (YES) CEO Tashmia Ismail-Saville will be speaking at the Finance Indaba.

Her session, titled “YES 4 Youth! How to create 1,000,000 work opportunities”, will take place in Breakaway Room 1 of the Sandton Convention Centre at 11am.

“What we thought we’d do was to pivot away from the usual doom and gloom stories about how bad the high youth unemployment number is,” Tashmia said. “Instead, we are going to talk about the numbers and the impact of youth employment.”

Her session will cover the financial contribution YES makes to South Africa by placing the youth into the economy. “In a very short time, we found jobs for 21,000 unemployed youth. The money they earn then circulates back into the local economy.”

Tashmia explained that she would like to uplift CFOs to take the power back. “If you funnel your BEE money into strategically business aligning opportunities, it can have a very big impact on the economy.”

“What most people don’t know is that you can get an entire BEE level by employing the youth. It’s a mindset shift, where you see the problem and turn it into an opportunity for the company,” she said.

Tashmia said that the CFOs are the holders of the funds and the way they allocate money can have “profound effects”.

“What we’ve realised when looking at the psychology of CFOs is that they are all frustrated with how much money goes into BEE,” she said.

“That is the call to action,” Tashmia concludes. “There are ways in which you can make money go a lot further in ways that you don’t have to feel frustrated. Get on a common platform with fellow CFOs and CEOs and direct funding in a much more structured and collective fashion.”
