Spar Group's Mark Godfrey nominated for 2020 CFO Awards

Mark has been with the Spar Group for more than 24 years, serving in various finance roles.

Spar Group CFO Mark Godfrey has been nominated for the 2020 CFO Awards, which will be taking place on 14 May. 

The annual ‘Oscars for South African finance professionals’, which are now entering their seventh year, recognise and reward CFOs of listed companies, large corporations, state-owned entities and government institutions for their outstanding performance and leadership.

Mark obtained a B.COM CTA from the University of Port Elizabeth, and then served articles with EY. After qualifying as a CA(SA) at the end of that period, he was then seconded to the Department of Finance (SARS) to serve his military service. He was thereafter offered a permanent appointment and served a further three years handling tax investigations.

Mark was approached by The Spar Group when the company was looking for a financial manager for the newly opened distribution centre in Port Elizabeth, and he was appointed to the position in early 1996. He spent eight-and-a-half years with that division. It was mid-2004 when he accepted a transfer to the North Rand distribution centre situated in Midrand to become the financial director. 

In an interview with CFO South Africa, Mark recalls:

“The position was extremely satisfying – not only from a personal growth perspective – but also due to the foreign operations handled from there. It was also an operation that enjoyed very satisfying growth – to the extent that by the end of 2009, it was the largest operation within the Group”.

In mid-2010 Mark was appointed group FD and he has held the group CFO position since October 2010.
