Vodacom recognised as Best Performer on JSE SRI Index

Vodacom was today recognised as a Best Performer company on the JSE's Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) Index. This accolade was achieved in the low environmental impact category, and Vodacom was the only ICT company to be awarded this status. Best Performers are companies that meet their relevant environmental threshold, their core indicators for societal, governance and related sustainability concerns as well all climate change indicators. The Index philosophy is founded on the principals of the triple bottom line, namely environmental, social and economic sustainability, underpinned by robust corporate governance.

"We are pleased to have been recognised by the JSE as a Best Performer and we are proud to be part of the SRI Index," says Portia Maurice, Vodacom's chief officer for corporate affairs. "We recognise that sustainability has long since evolved from being a corporate nice to have to being an integral part of our strategy and approach to business." Apart from its commitment to reducing its carbon emissions by 5% every year, Vodacom recently achieved Africa's first 6-Star Green Star rating for the Vodafone Innovation Centre building in Midrand. The innovation centre, a carbon neutral building, will house a team of experts tasked with developing innovative technology to help reduce Vodafone's carbon footprint globally.

This is the third consecutive year that Vodacom has been included on the SRI Index and its first as a Best Performer.
