ArcelorMittal South Africa appoints Kobus Verster as CEO

Verster takes over from Wim de Klerk, who recently announced that he would be retiring in January 2018

Verster (pictured), the former head of JSE-listed construction firm Aveng, will take over from de Klerk as chief executive in February 2018. 

Verster was CEO of Aveng for nearly four years – from February 2014 to September 2017. He also served on the board of ArcelorMittal SA as CFO and executive director from February 2006 until August 2010. Prior to being CFO, Verster held various senior roles in financial management, including GM of corporate finance and treasury from 1990.

Lakshmi Mittal, ArcelorMittal group chairperson and CEO, said:

"We look forward to having Kobus on board. As someone we have worked with previously, we believe he will sustain the momentum of leading our important strategic investment in Africa, restoring the company back to profitability and sustainable performance."
