Yimile Ngqele, Roads and Public Works department CFO for the Province of the Eastern Cape, has been suspended following allegations of financial mismanagement and poor performance, as well as alleged irregular expenditure incurred by his department. In his absence, Zoleka Madikazi has been appointed Acting CFO.
Eastern Cape newspaper the Dispatch reported that Ngqele, in addition to being suspended for poor performance, is being held accountable for the R660 million irregularly spent by the department during the 2015-2016 financial year.
According to department spokesman Mphumzi Zuzile, while head of department Advocate James Mlawu (pictured) has suspended Ngqele, no charges have yet been served. Until Ngqele has been officially informed of the charges he faces, no further comment can thus be made.
According to the Dispatch, Ngqele's suspension is the fourth CFO suspension by provincial departments in the past year.
