John Hudson has been appointed as sugar producer Tongaat Hulett's new CEO.

In a SENS announcement released on Monday, Tongaat Hulett announced the appointment of former SABMiller chief executive officer John Gavin Hudson as its new CEO with effect from 1 February.

John will be replacing Sydney Mtsambiwa who served as interim CEO after the resignation of Peter Staud in November 2018. He will lead the strategic review and direction of the group “in order to restore shareholder returns to acceptable levels, improve cash generation and reduce debt levels,” Tongaat said.

John described their new CEO as an accomplished business executive with considerable experience in diverse and challenging markets in the alcoholic beverages industry.

He was previously the Beer Group president and CEO of Anadolu Efes, a company listed on the Turkish stock exchange. Prior to this, he served as the managing director of Anadolu Efes’ beer businesses in Turkey and Russia and spent 26 years within SABMiller, holding senior roles both in South Africa and internationally.

“The Board is confident that Mr Hudson, with the support of the executive team, will be successful in leading the strategic review and direction of Tongaat Hulett in order to restore shareholder returns to acceptable levels, improve cash generation and reduce debt levels," said the company.
