Giyani Municipality CFO fired over suspected VBS involvement

Municipality "working to survive" with the assets remaining in the wake of the VBS scandal.

Steven Mabunda, spokesperson for the Giyani Municipality in the Limpopo Province, announced on Sunday that Hitler Maluleke, CFO of the municipality, had been dismissed on Friday.

Mabunda said that part of the reason for Maluleke’s dismissal is that he was directly involved in the VBS investment scandal and that he is also accused of having authorised payment for some projects that were not done.

This came to light when a new full-time manager, who was hired in January, uncovered some suspicious transactions. An independent forensic investigation followed and a report was compiled.

Hitler was put on precautionary suspension, along with the director of technical services Precious Mathebula, who resigned a day before the disciplinary hearings.

The disciplinary hearings resulted in Hitler’s dismissal, as well as a criminal case being opened against both Hitler and Precious with the Hawks in Polokwane in August.

Mabunda said:

“The municipality remains unsure as to what would happen with the approximately R160 million the local authority had invested with VBS bank. It might now come back… We are working around the clock to try and survive with what we have now.”
