Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba has removed Rabelani Dagada from the mayoral committee for finance

Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba (pictured) has removed Rabelani Dagada from his role as MMC of Finance in the City of Johannesburg. This following a forensic investigation which found Dagada in breach of the City’s code of conduct.

According to the Mayor, he made the decision in consultation with the Federal Executive of the Democratic Alliance (DA).

Mashaba said in a statement:

“Late last year, media articles appeared which alleged serious activities of undue influence and nepotism against Cllr Dagada. At the time I immediately initiated a forensic investigation through an external company, which was concluded this Friday. The forensic investigation has found that Cllr Dagada has breached the City’s Code of Conduct by not declaring his interests and, subsequently, conflicts of interest with individuals closely associated with him. Further to this, the forensic investigation has found Cllr Dagada to have been involved in price fixing with a service provider to the City, and in the process acted against his sworn duty to our residents.”

Dagada has denied the allegations and called the dismissal a political “witch hunt”. He said in a Tweet on 15 January: “I will do anything possible to clear my name and it shall be cleared.”

In his statement, Mashaba added that to ensure he has “decisive and suitable leadership in this important portfolio”, he has moved MMC Funzela Ngobeni from Development Planning to MMC of Finance with immediate effect, and appointed Reuben Masango to replace him.
