Mitchell is awaiting the approval of his intra-company transfer permit and visa to work in SA.

Massmart has announced the appointment of Walmart veteran Mitchell Slape as its new CEO and executive director with effect from 1 September 2019 following the approval and grant of his intra-company transfer permit and visa to work in South Africa.

Mitchell will be joining Massmart from Walmart Japan, where he was the CEO. He has been with Walmart since 1995. He has extensive leadership experience across a range of retail formats and Walmart markets, including the United States, Japan, India and Mexico.

The announcement of his appointment was published the same day as a warning that Massmart’s earnings for the six months to June could decrease by more than half.

As a result, the press release stated that Guy Hayward will step down and resign as CEO, executive director and committee member of Massmart with effect from 31 August 2019. He will remain with Massmart until December 2019 to ensure a smooth handover and transition.
