SA's former deputy finance minister has been appointed as an independent non-executive director at MTN.
MTN Group today announced that Mcebisi Jonas, South Africa’s former deputy finance minister, and Bajabulile Swazi Tshabalala, a South African businesswoman, have joined its board as independent non-executive directors.
Jonas served as deputy finance minister for nearly three years before former president Jacob Zuma fired him in what became known as the midnight cabinet reshuffle. Jonas is currently one of four independent Presidential Investment Envoys appointed by president Cyril Ramaphosa to attract investors to South Africa, and is the former chairperson and non-executive director of the Public Investment Corporation (PIC).
Tshabalala has over 20 years of professional experience in finance, risk management, treasury and general management, having worked in a wide range of institutions, state-owned companies and the private sector. Her experience also spans various sectors, including transportation and logistics, infrastructure and financial services. She is currently a non-executive director of Tiger Brands and South African Airways (SAA).
