Mohammed will be taking over from Hans van Lierop as CFO and executive director with effect from 1 August.

Massmart, the retailer behind brands including Makro and Game has announced the appointment of its new chief financial officer Mohammed Abdool-Samad, a previous CFO Awards nominee.

He will be taking over from Johannes (Hans) van Lierop with effect from 1 August. Hans will step down at the end of July 2019 for personal reasons, but will remain at Massmart until later in the year in an advisory capacity to support Mohammed through a handover period.

Mohammed joins Massmart from Illovo Sugar, where he was group finance director. Before serving with Illovo Sugar, he spent a decade in various executive finance roles within Anglo American plc.

In an earlier interview with CFO South Africa, he said:

“I find that the CFO generally spends less time on pure financial reporting, tax & treasury (although still core). Instead I find more time is dedicated towards strategy, business development, risk management, and operational efficiencies.”
