Mohammed joins Massmart from Illovo Sugars, where he was group finance director. He said that he will miss the innovative and high performance culture.

“90 percent of the business is in Africa (excluding South Africa), which creates exciting opportunities, with risks that need to be carefully managed,” he said.

But the “challenge of moving to a new industry (retail) and moving back into the listed environment” is what made him take the job.

“I am looking forward to being part of a vibrant industry, with massive opportunities, operating in the context of a subdued economy.”

He plans to work with the executive team and Walmart (Massmart owner) to identify and implement transformative opportunities.
