Spar appoints Brett Botten as new CEO

Brett Botten will be taking over from Graham O'Connor, who will become chairperson in March 2021.

The Spar Group has announced that Spar South Rand managing director Brett Botten will be appointed as CEO from March 2021. He will be succeeding current CEO Graham O’Connor, who will become the new chairperson following the retirement of Mike Hankinson after 16 years at the helm.

Brett, a qualified CA, first joined Spar in 1994 and has experience in the retail sector, having served as MD of the Spar North Rand, Spar Lowveld, and Spar Eastern Cape divisions. He has been the MD of the group’s biggest division, Spar South Rand, since 2010.

“Brett has built an incredible amount of experience in the retail market over many years, notably in numerous leadership roles within Spar South Africa, and will continue to drive us forward strongly, placing our culture of caring and community first,” Graham said in welcome to Brett in his new role.

The company has also appointed non-executive director Andrew Waller as the lead independent director “to ensure high levels of corporate governance and independence”, and former South Rand marketing executive Jerome Jacobs has been promoted to MD of North Rand “to drive diversity and further strengthen regional reach”.
