Irene Mathatho grew up in a rural village in Mokopane, Limpopo. She was appointed as the first CFO of the Companies Tribunal in 2012. She is responsible for the overall management of the finances and the preparation of financial reports, supply chain management, risk management, payroll management, asset management and strategic planning. She also ensures compliance with the Public Finance Management Act and that everything complies with generally recognised accounting practices. In her previous role as CFO at the National Metrology Institute of South Africa she had to similarly establish processes and policies after it separated from the CSIR. She has an MBA and a Higher Diploma in tax law.

It assists in the resolution of disputes. The Tribunal has jurisdiction throughout the Republic of South Africa. It is independent, and subject to the Constitution and the law.
