He has a B.Com from the University of Stellenbosch, after which he moved to Johannesburg and qualified as a member of the SA Institute of Stockbrokers. In 1996 Lourens was appointed Financial Director and Compliance Officer of stock broking firm Irish & Menell Rosenberg (Pty) Ltd and its successors the Appleton Group.
