With seven students in the top ten, the university takes first place in South Africa for the third time.
The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) has announced that 2,149 of 3,657 aspiring chartered accountants have passed its Initial Test of Competence (ITC), the first of two qualifying exams written by all chartered accountants, in January 2020.
Commenting on the results, SAICA CEO Freeman Nomvalo said:
“SAICA would like to acknowledge all those candidates who wrote the ITC and extend a special note of congratulations to those who passed. We trust that those candidates will hold themselves to the same high standards of excellence as they progress towards their final qualifying exam, the Assessment of Professional Competence.”
To pass the test, candidates must have an overall pass mark of 50 percent. However, these top 10 candidates, seven of which came from the University of Pretoria, were recognised for their excellent performance:
- Hayley Ward from the Nelson Mandela University
- Andre van Staden from the University of Pretoria
- Adrian Rathbone from the University of Pretoria
- Charis du Plessis from the Nelson Mandela University
- Daniela Cronje from the North-West University
- Andre Meyer from the University of Pretoria
- Christine Butters from the University of Pretoria
- Janaless Moyle from the University of Pretoria
- Elizabeth Bell from the University of Pretoria tied with Sumaiya Jeewa from the University of Pretoria
“The role that universities play in the development of CAs(SA) cannot be under-estimated. SAICA would therefore like to extend its congratulations to the University of Nelson Mandela, the University of Pretoria and North-West University for the role they have played in
supporting these top 10 candidates,” said Freeman.
Out of the 16 universities accredited by SAICA, the University of Pretoria has placed first in South Africa for the third time in the ITC, achieving a 92 percent pass rate for all candidates compared to the national pass rate of 59 percent. The university also has an 86 percent pass rate among African candidates.
University of Pretoria vice-chancellor and principal Prof Tawana Kupe (pictured) said:
“The 2019 cohort of students of the CA Programme have performed brilliantly in the ITC, maintaining our university’s leadership position in the field. I wish to congratulate them all, specifically the seven students who appeared in the Top Ten.”
