Naspers, Africa’s largest company by market value, has named Akash Bhatia as the new CFO of its Showmax video streaming business. Bhatia is currently vice president of finance at Naspers’s classifieds business. He previously held positions at Time Warner’s HBO and Comcast’s NBCUniversal. Bhatia has been quoted in the media as saying:
"What attracted me to Showmax is the growth potential and how they're tackling expansion. The approach of being locally relevant in everything from content and functionality to payments and partnerships makes a lot of sense."
Naspers is in the process of expanding its video streaming offering to 36 countries in a bid to challenge its biggest competitor, Netflix Inc, which is also growing its presence in the region. Showmax was made available to Naspers's pay-TV customers in June this year.
