Absa enables customers to transact over Twitter

Absa Bank recently launched its innovative Absa ChatBanking option, allowing social media-savvy customers to conduct certain banking transactions via Twitter.

  • We don't need banks; we need banking. Join us at our upcoming Fintech Africa event on 23 June, in Johannesburg, where we will unpack this and other fascinating concepts around the future of banking.

Via its ChatBanking account, @AbsaChatBanking, Absa clients can instantly interact with the institution via direct message to request account balances, buy data or airtime, or view the last three transactions on the account.

According to Absa, for now the service will limit users to specific transactions within their own profiles, while data and airtime purchases are only for the account holder. This is to ensure safety and security of the service.

While hashtag transactions are a new concept in South Africa - Absa being the first to launch the service - this is not a new concept in digital transactions. Vodacom in 2014 said in the media that it was considering a similar service that would allow customers to purchase products through social media channels.
