FirstRand Group has appointed Gert Kruger as its new chief risk officer

Kruger has worked in a variety of roles in the FirstRand Group, including CRO at RMB.

FirstRand Group has announced the appointment of Gert Kruger as its new group chief risk officer with effect from 1 July. 

According to a statement, Kruger will be reporting to group COO Mary Vilakazi and will be a member of the group’s strategic executive committee. 

He has been with the group for 16 years, most recently serving as CRO at RMB. Prior to joining RMB, he helped build the group’s credit risk framework for retail, commercial and corporate lending. 

The statement said that “this deep understanding of group-wide frameworks, places Kruger in a unique position to provide greater portfolio oversight and ensure alignment of the second line of defence to FirstRand’s integrated financial services strategy and operating model.”

Kruger is a qualified CA(SA) with a B.Com accounting degree from the University of Pretoria. He also holds a master’s degree in financial economics from the University of London. 

After completing his articles, he held various roles at PSG and PwC. He then worked in a variety of roles in the FirstRand Group, including group treasury, capital management and credit portfolio management.
