- Umar Banda (City of Tshwane) has been nominated for the 2017 CFO Awards.
A chartered accountant and a graduate of the Wits University Business School's programme for municipal finance executives, Reggie joined the municipality in December 2013, after stints at Gobodo Incorporated Chartered Accountants, the Infrastructure Finance Corporation and the Central Energy Fund. He is charged with integrating all strategic financial issues at group level and has almost 2 000 people working under him.
In an interview with CFO South Africa, Reggie maintained that good, robust legislation governed how municipalities handled their money:
"I can't think of many places that are more regulated than where we operate, and ensuring you don't have leakages in your system comes down to internal controls. Appointing the right people first is where it starts. You may appoint someone who is competent but their moral compass isn't where you'd like it to be, or someone who doesn't have the competence to ensure the controls are in place."
