Thungela Resources CFO Deon Smith has been nominated for the 2022 CFO Awards.

Deon Smith has been nominated for the 2022 CFO Awards for his work as the CFO of Thungela Resources. With Deon’s leadership, Thungela was able to achieve solid results for its first set of results since demerging, notwithstanding a number of challenges.

At the annual “Oscars for South African finance professionals”, which is now entering its eighth year, CFOs of listed companies, large corporations, state-owned entities and government institutions are recognised and rewarded for their outstanding performance and leadership.

Deon was appointed as the CFO of Anglo American’s demerged South Africa thermal coal operations, Thungela Resources, in April 2021. Prior to this, he served as the CFO of Anglo American’s coal South Africa division from July 2017.

He joined Anglo American in 2007 and has since headed up various finance departments within the company, including risk and assurance, accounting services, capital management and corporate finance South Africa. Before joining Anglo, he was a senior manager at KPMG Advisory from 2000 to 2005, and prior to that, he served as the CEO of Cura Software Solutions for a year.
