Rajesh Mahabeer has been recognised for his work at SANParks by being nominated for a CFO Award. The annual 'Oscars for South African CFOs', to be held on 11 May, recognises CFOs of listed companies, large corporations, state-owned entities and government institutions and awards them for outstanding performance and leadership.

A seasoned financial executive with more than 35 years of experience under his belt, Rajesh has successfully steered a number of organisations through difficult periods, including Walter Sisulu University, the Auditor-General of South Africa and SANParks. He is a chartered accountant, a chartered management accountant, an MBA graduate and a PhD candidate at Wits University.

SANParks is responsible for 3 751 113ha of protected land in 20 national parks and is the custodian of the indigenous fauna, flora, landscapes and associated cultural heritage of the country. It generates 75% of its operating revenue. Rajesh is responsible for the organisation's entire financial portfolio, supply chain management and fundraising.

In an interview in March, Rajesh spoke about the challenge of heading SANParks' financial department:

"SANParks is a large, multifaceted organisation with several focal areas, including tourism, conservation and the management of estates. This mix creates a different level of complexity. I would say SANParks is far more complex than other environment where I've worked."
