Quality positions are difficult to come by in the current market and there is a lot of competition for those that are available. While on a job hunt, it is important to prepare yourself for success in order to gain an advantage over other candidates. Every recruitment process is different but there are some critical elements that remain unchanged and which you need to be prepared for in order to be successful.

In her presentation at the Finance Indaba Africa 2016 in October, Georgina Barrack, MD of Cassel & Co, provides tips for job-seekers gleaned from her vast experience in the corporate recruitment sector. She covers the entire recruitment process, from first contact with a head-hunter to understanding and interviewing with your prospective employer. If you are serious about clinching that dream role, you would do well to listen to Barrick's advice.

"It's okay to feel anxious, but not fearful, because when you make decisions from a place of fear, invariably they will not be the right ones. Think about times in your past where perhaps you've made a decision either in business or in your personal life out of fear. Ultimately, the results you achieve are not those full of abundance."

She outlined the following key principles in the process:

  • Decide what you want.
  • Remove the doubt - believe in your abilities.
  • Pay attention to your thoughts and feelings. Don't operate from a base of fear.
  • Pay attention to the signs and be alive to the opportunity.
  • Be committed to the process.
  • Take responsibility for your situation.
